| About Nolan Motorcycle Helmets |
| Nolan began production of Motorcycle helmets in Bergamo, Italy in the early 1970's. Nolan began using sophisticated materials to bring optimum performance to motorcycle riders at a competitive price. Today, Nolan Helmets hold more than 50% of the European market and manufactures all components to their helmets in house. |
Within the company we have a laboratory which is considered qualified by the Italian Ministry of Transport and ensures that regulatory compliance testing is carried out. The products are later sent to third party laboratories for approval. Once approval has been given, line production begins in conjunction with constant and thorough checks on every single component.
The final product is also tested through destructive tests on random samples to ascertain compliance with international standards. Nolan has always submitted its products to additional tests, not required by current regulations: the helmet is most extreme operating conditions are submitted to laboratory-simulation, thus ensuring the highest standards of quality. |

In Europe , Nolan is famous for their line of full-face helmets, which offer the latest design and superior comfort at a reasonable cost. In the US , Nolan offers the N-84 NCOM, which is packed with features, of which the most exciting are the innovative integrated sun-shield design and the NCOM communication system that can be added seamlessly to the helmet.
Ready for N-COM communication system: for the first time, a helmet company designed a comprehensive communication system perfectly integrated into their helmets, which allows riders to communicate either with the conventional wires or using BlueTooth technology. Riders will buy the helmet, then equip it as they wish to answer their phone, listen to music, let their GPS guide them or talk with their passenger without any cumbersome wires and switch box to fit on their bike.

Although there are many different types of Nolan helmets, the company is best known for its flip-up helmet line. The N102 & N103 helmets are the premium flip-up Nolan helmets. These helmets have some solid features. The first thing you'll notice about Nolan helmets is how comfortable they are. Surprisingly, the feel of these helmets rival that of any top of the line Arai or Shoei helmet.
Another standout feature of the Nolan helmet is the latching mechanism. In place of the standard D-ring latch system, is Nolan's unique 'Microlock Retention System'. With this feature, you need only adjust the straps once then use the easy buckle to secure the helmet and you're good to go.
.If you're in the market for a flip-up, you owe it to yourself to consider a Nolan helmet. The overall quality of the helmet is good. Throw in the proprietary 'Microlock Retention System' and superior comfort, and you've got a very attractive helmet.
N102 Review
Helmet Fit and Comfort
I found the N102 comfortable even during extended rides. The interior does an excellent job of absorbing perspiration and keeping it away from the skin unlike some helmets which turn into soggy sponges after a few hours in the saddle.
The antimicrobial interior also appears to do its job even during hot multi-day road trips. The interior remained odorless compared to some helmet interiors which can begin to smell like a laundry hamper full of gym clothes in no time at all. The interior padding of the N-102 is completely removable and is kept in place by snaps and tabs. The interior is made from hypoallergenic and antimicrobial material and is very comfortable. A word that comes to mind when describing the interior is 'plush'.
Internal Shape
I think that the N-102 fitting will favor round heads and full faces, a trait it shares with the X-1002. Some riders may wish for a bit less room around the face and a bit more room for the chin and around the forehead.
The N-102 also sits a bit higher on the head than some helmets such as the Vega Summit (see the webBikeWorld review of the original Vega Summit and the more recent Vega Summit II. For more information on motorcycle helmet internal shapes and selecting and fitting motorcycle helmets.
Air Flow
Ventilation is provided by two flip open ports in front of the helmet and a large three position slider on the top of the helmet. The ventilation provided is adequate but not outstanding. The front ports are designed so that they are either open or closed but they may be used independently of each other allowing for three possible settings.
Visor
Optically, the visor is superb. The flip-up, or modular visor works very nicely even with thick gloves. The locking mechanisms on the N102 are metal and very rugged. It can be a bit difficult lifting the visor with bulky winter gloves. Also, due to the tight seal of the visor, closing it sometimes requires an extra push from the top to get it fully down.
Helmet Ride Test - N103
I have to say, that with all the high end helmets I have, and have tested, The N103 is excellent. It's comfortable, and quite silent. When your helmet is in turbulent air (like when riding my BMW 1150GS), noise levels are fine. It's not super silent, but then none of the helmets tested were. On the Ducati 1100 MTS, where the wind screen is low, noise levels are very low.
